Children from 2nd, 3rd and 4th classes took part in a Bridge Building Challenge as part of Engineers Week. Vinny Barrett, a volunteer from Intel, Shannon came to our school.
He gave a presentation on the work he does and he showed a short video on how the work of engineers can be seen in the world around us, from buildings, to transport, to electronics etc.
Then he set a challenge to the children to construct a bridge strong enough to support three toy cars.
Working in groups of five, the children were given a kit containing lollipop sticks, string, blue tac, elastic bands and paper clips.
First the groups spent some time drawing up a plan of their bridge and then they spent an hour constructing their bridges.
Vinny stressed the importance both of working as a team and of being able to adapt when things don’t go to plan.
The pupils put in a huge effort and all the bridges stood up to the three car challenge!
Prizes were given to the two teams that worked best as a team.
All pupils will receive a certificate of participation from Intel.
