This week, 4th and 5th class learned about the properties and characteristics of different materials. In discussing material strength, we conducted an experiment to test the strength of newspaper. A sheet of newspaper was stretched between two desks and taped in place. We then placed books on top, one at a time, and continued until the paper tore or collapsed. We made sure to use books that were all the same to ensure it was a fair test. We were shocked by the number of books that the newspaper could support, one group managed over seventy books!! After conducting the first experiment, we then tested out different ways of strengthening the newspaper, such as folding it, crimping it and layering it. Everyone worked excellently in groups and wrote up the experiment afterwards in our copies to document the process.
